The Challenge

The children's literature community is a vibrant, enthusiastic industry that thrives on exciting storytelling and gripping narratives. Its creators not only seek professional development opportunities that can propel their freelance careers, but also fun and engaging events to connect with each other. Providing platforms that invite BIPOC and other underrepresented communities to share their knowledge, culture, and stories is imperative to elevating the entire marketplace.

The Approach

Partnering with nonprofit regional chapters of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Christina filled their dearth of quality programming with unique and educational opportunities for writers and artists. She leveraged her industry connections and years of experience illustrating diverse picture books to recruit a range of speakers and geared her events to address business needs and craft. Christina also capitalized on the camaraderie that sets kidlit apart from other industries by organizing a slew of networking and social mixers.

The Results

Christina’s efforts culminated in more than 35 workshops and conferences that touched thousands of lives and covered everything from digital marketing and self-promotion to craft practices and copyrights. As a regional coordinator, she managed a core group of volunteers and assigned duties in hospitality, graphic design, and more. Her services enabled members to have their work seen by industry professionals in reviews and showcases. She later branched off to independently run art salons that featured networking mixers, an illustrator’s art show, and inspirational field trips.
